Hiring in Slovakia? The only Visegrád country using the euro.

Slovakia is a founding eurozone economy with one of the highest cars-produced-per-capita rates of any country, but getting your employment model wrong still carries real cost in time, money, and compliance. We help you choose the right way to hire, place you with the right partner, and stay alongside you for the life of the relationship.

A eurozone economy built on cars. A six-fund contribution system underneath.

Slovakia adopted the euro in 2009, the only Visegrád country to do so, and hosts assembly plants for Volkswagen, Kia, Stellantis, and Jaguar Land Rover, giving it one of the highest cars-produced-per-capita rates of any country in the world. But employer costs run through two separate systems, Sociálna poisťovňa (Social Insurance Agency) and a separately-chosen private health insurer, that a company used to a single combined payroll tax can easily get wrong.

01

Eurozone member, automotive powerhouse

Slovakia has used the euro since 2009, unlike Czechia, Poland, and Hungary, so budgets set in EUR carry no currency-conversion risk. Volkswagen, Kia, Stellantis, and Jaguar Land Rover all run assembly plants here, and Slovakia has for years produced more cars per capita than any other country.

02

Employees choose their own health insurer

A single national Labour Code, mandatory contributions administered by Sociálna poisťovňa across six separate funds (sickness, old-age pension, disability, unemployment, guarantee, and reserve) plus a separate uncapped accident-insurance contribution, health insurance chosen independently through a private health insurer, and dismissal that is only lawful on a fixed list of statutory grounds, mean your employment structure has to be chosen with care.

Four ways to hire in Slovakia. Pick once, pick right.

Most businesses arrive having already decided, and often decided too quickly. Here is the honest version of each route. When one fits, the detailed guide is one click away.

Employer of Record

An EOR partner becomes the legal employer of your Slovak staff, handling the contract, payroll, statutory withholdings (income tax, social insurance, health insurance), and Labour Code compliance, while you direct the work. Operational in days, no entity needed. Best for testing the market or hiring a small team.

Global Payroll

For when you already have a Slovak entity, or want to consolidate payroll across several countries. You stay the legal employer; a specialist partner runs the monthly withholding, Sociálna poisťovňa and health-insurer filings, and Finančná správa (Financial Administration) remittances correctly.

Entity Formation (s.r.o.)

Your own Slovak company, most commonly an s.r.o. (limited liability company). Today, founding documents need only certified signatures and Obchodný register (Commercial Register) entry; from 17 August 2026 a new Commercial Register Act requires a notarial deed or an attorney-authorised agreement instead. Full control and a local presence, but you carry registration and ongoing filings. Right when the headcount and permanence justify it.

PEO Services

A co-employment model alongside your own Slovak entity. True PEO co-employment is far less established in Slovakia than in the US, so for most companies EOR or managed payroll is the better fit. We advise whether PEO fits your situation, not a stock answer.

Slovakia at a glance

Currency

Euro (EUR). Slovakia adopted the euro in 2009, unlike its Visegrád neighbours; salaries are set and paid in EUR, so a eurozone budget carries no currency-conversion risk here.

Minimum wage (2026)

EUR 915 per month (EUR 5.259 per hour on a 40-hour week) from 1 January 2026, up from EUR 816 in 2025. Set automatically each year at 60% of the national average wage, one national floor with no regional variation to track.

Employer costs

Employers pay approximately 36.2% of gross salary up to the EUR 16,764/month ceiling: 24.4% split across Sociálna poisťovňa’s six funds, plus 11% health insurance and 0.8% accident insurance. Social insurance stops at the ceiling; health and accident insurance continue uncapped above it.

Leave & Notice

Slovakia is not at-will: dismissal is only lawful on a closed list of statutory grounds under the Labour Code, with notice periods running from one to three months depending on length of service. Minimum 4 weeks’ paid annual leave (5 weeks from age 33 or when raising a young child), with 15 public holidays in 2026, of which 11 fall as paid non-working days.

Hiring in Slovakia: quick answers

The questions we are asked most about hiring in Slovakia.

An Employer of Record. Your hire can start in days, with a compliant Slovak employment contract from day one and no entity to set up. It is the lowest-risk way to test the market or place a small team.
No. With an EOR you can employ people in Slovakia without your own company. You only need to incorporate when you are committing to a permanent, larger presence, and we advise you on the right time to make that move.
Two separate mandatory contribution systems, Sociálna poisťovňa’s six funds plus a separately-chosen private health insurer, an uncapped accident-insurance layer that keeps applying above the standard contribution ceiling, and dismissal that is only lawful on a fixed list of statutory grounds rather than at-will. None of it is a problem when handled correctly, which is the point of getting the model right at the start.
We are independent: we assess what you actually need, place you with the right vetted partner, secure pricing you will not get going direct, and stay on your side to escalate or renegotiate. You get advice, not a product pitch.
