Hiring in Belgium? Start with the model, not the sector.

Belgium is one of the most attractive places to build a team, but getting your employment model wrong still carries real cost in time, money, and compliance. We help you choose the right way to hire, place you with the right partner, and stay alongside you for the life of the relationship.

A great market to hire in. A sector-by-sector maze underneath.

Belgium is one of the most stable places to build a team: a top-25 global economy, a highly educated multilingual workforce, and a transparent legal system, but with minimum pay and many benefits set sector by sector through collective bargaining rather than by one national scale.

01

Home of the EU and NATO

The only country hosting both the EU institutions and NATO headquarters, with a trilingual Dutch, French, and German workforce and direct access to the EU single market from its political centre.

02

Highly regulated labour market

National employment law, mandatory ONSS social security contributions, and termination rules that are not at-will mean your employment structure has to be chosen with care.

Four ways to hire in Belgium. Pick right, or the joint committee picks for you.

Most businesses arrive having already decided, and often decided too quickly. Here is the honest version of each route. When one fits, the detailed guide is one click away.

Employer of Record

An EOR partner becomes the legal employer of your Belgian staff, handling the contract, payroll, ONSS social security contributions, income tax withholding, and sectoral compliance, while you direct the work. Operational in days, no entity needed. Best for testing the market or hiring a small team.

Global Payroll

For when you already have a Belgian entity, or want to consolidate payroll across several countries under one process. You stay the legal employer; a specialist partner runs the ONSS DmfA filings, tax withholding, and year-end 281.10 declarations correctly.

Entity Formation (BV)

Your own Belgian company, most commonly a BV/SRL (private limited company). Belgium requires a notarial deed to incorporate; there is no fixed minimum share capital for a BV/SRL, but you must show sufficient starting capital in a financial plan. Full control and a local presence, in exchange for the notarial process and ongoing filings. Right when the headcount and permanence justify it.

PEO Services

A co-employment model alongside your own Belgian entity. True PEO co-employment is far less established in Belgium than in the US, so for most companies EOR or managed payroll is the better fit. We will tell you honestly which one your situation calls for.

Belgium at a glance

Currency

Euro (EUR). Salaries are set and paid in EUR; if your budget lives in USD or GBP, exchange movement quietly changes your real cost.

Minimum wage (2026)

EUR 2,189.81 per month (RMMMG), effective April 2026 for workers 18 and over. Many sectors set a higher minimum through their own collective agreement.

Employer costs

Employer social security runs to about 25% of gross salary (24.92% base ONSS contribution), covering pension, healthcare, unemployment, family benefits, and occupational injury insurance, with no earnings ceiling.

Leave & Notice

Belgium is not at-will: ending an indefinite contract needs statutory notice or pay in lieu, on a schedule that scales with seniority (capped at 52 weeks from 17 years’ service for contracts starting from June 2026). Minimum 20 days paid annual leave, plus double holiday pay, and 10 public holidays.

Hiring in Belgium: quick answers

The questions we are asked most about hiring in Belgium.

An Employer of Record. Your hire can start in days, with a compliant Belgian employment contract from day one and no entity to set up. It is the lowest-risk way to test the market or place a small team. The detail is on our Belgium EOR guide.
No. With an EOR you can employ people in Belgium without your own company. You only need to incorporate when you are committing to a permanent, larger presence, and we will tell you honestly when that point arrives.
Sector-by-sector collective bargaining on top of national law, mandatory ONSS social security contributions, and termination rules that require notice or pay in lieu rather than at-will dismissal. None of it is a problem when handled correctly, which is the point of getting the model right at the start.
We are independent: we assess what you actually need, place you with the right vetted partner, secure pricing you will not get going direct, and stay on your side to escalate or renegotiate. You get advice, not a product pitch.
