Hiring in Switzerland? Choose the structure before the canton complicates it.

Switzerland is one of the world’s highest-value markets to hire into, but a 26-canton patchwork of tax and social insurance makes getting your model wrong genuinely costly in time, money, and compliance. We help you choose the right way to hire, place you with the right partner, and stay alongside you for the life of the relationship.

Twenty-six cantons, one chance to get your first hire right.

Switzerland is one of the world’s most stable and prosperous economies: politically secure, a global hub for finance, pharma and commodities, with a highly educated, multilingual, English-capable workforce.

01

Stability and high-value talent

Political and economic stability, a highly skilled multilingual workforce, and a central location, outside the EU but at its commercial heart.

02

Twenty-six-canton system

Federal law sets the floor, but tax and many rules run at cantonal and communal level, and the three-pillar social system has real detail, so your employment structure has to be chosen with care.

Four ways to hire in Switzerland. The fit depends on canton and headcount.

Most businesses arrive having already decided, and often decided too quickly. Here is the honest version of each route. When one fits, the detailed guide is one click away.

Employer of Record

An EOR partner becomes the legal employer of your Swiss staff, handling the contract, payroll, tax, and compliance, while you direct the work. Operational in days, no entity needed. Best for testing the market or hiring a small team.

Global Payroll

For when you already have a Swiss entity, or want to consolidate payroll across several cantons or countries under one process. You stay the legal employer; a specialist partner runs compliant Swiss payroll.

Entity Formation

Your own Swiss company (a GmbH or AG). Full control and a local presence, with no per-employee fees, but setup takes notarisation and paid-in capital, you cannot employ anyone until it completes, and the ongoing obligations are real. Right when the headcount and permanence justify it.

PEO Services

A co-employment model where you and a partner share the employer role. Less common in Switzerland than EOR, and right only for specific structures. We will tell you honestly if it fits, or if EOR is simpler.

Switzerland at a glance

Currency

Swiss Franc (CHF). Salaries are paid in francs, one of the world’s strongest currencies; budget accordingly.

Minimum wage (2026)

No statutory federal minimum wage. Some cantons set their own (Geneva CHF 24.59/hour, others ranging CHF 20.00 to 22.20), and many sectors set floors via collective agreements.

Employer costs

Employer social insurance is roughly 6.4% to 12% of salary, plus the age-banded BVG occupational pension (7% to 18%, split with the employee).

Leave & Notice

Minimum 4 weeks’ paid annual leave (5 weeks under age 20). Notice is generally 1 to 3 months by length of service, after a probation period of typically one month (extendable to three), during which either side may terminate on 7 days’ notice.

Hiring in Switzerland: the need-to-knows

The questions we are asked most about hiring in Switzerland.

An Employer of Record. Your hire can start in days, with a compliant Code of Obligations contract from day one and no entity to set up. It is the lowest-risk way to test the market or place a small team. The detail is on our Switzerland EOR guide.
No. With an EOR you can employ people in Switzerland without your own company. You only need an entity (a GmbH or AG) when you are committing to a permanent, larger presence, and we will tell you honestly when that point arrives.
Tax and many employment rules run at federal, cantonal and communal level, the three-pillar social system has real detail, and source-tax rules apply to foreign employees. None of it is a problem when handled correctly, which is the point of getting the model right at the start.
We are independent: we assess what you actually need, place you with the right vetted partner, secure pricing you will not get going direct, and stay on your side to escalate or renegotiate. You get advice, not a product pitch.

Tell us who you want to hire and where you are headed in Switzerland. One conversation maps your options, flags the risks, and usually gets you to a better answer, and better pricing, than going direct. No pitch.
