What running payroll in Iceland involves

If you already employ people through your own Icelandic entity, you stay the legal employer, but you still have to run payroll correctly every month: income tax withholding to Skatturinn, tryggingagjald on top of gross salary, and pension contributions routed to each employee’s own chosen pension fund, not one central body. This is where a specialist payroll partner earns its place: you keep the employment relationship, they keep the rates and the routing right every cycle.

01

You stay the employer

You stay the legal employer of your Icelandic staff. The payroll partner runs the monthly mechanics; you keep the employment relationship.

02

Accurate every cycle

Income tax, tryggingagjald, and pension contributions calculated and routed correctly, payslips issued, and statutory filings made to Skatturinn and each employee’s own pension fund on schedule, every month.

03

Multi-country consolidation

Run payroll across several markets under one partner and one process, rather than a different vendor and standard in every country.

How managed Icelandic payroll works, step by step

From onboarding your employee data to filing and reconciliation.

01 — Scope & onboard

We map your entity, headcount, and where you employ people, place you with the right vetted Icelandic payroll partner, and onboard your employee data, including which pension fund each employee has chosen.

02 — Set up calculations

Income tax withholding, tryggingagjald, pension-fund routing, and any statutory benefits configured correctly to current Icelandic rules, so every payslip is right from the first run.

03 — Run monthly payroll

Salaries calculated, income tax and tryggingagjald withheld, pension contributions routed to the right fund, payslips issued, and people paid on schedule, every cycle.

04 — File & reconcile

Statutory filings to Skatturinn made on time, pension contributions reconciled against each employee’s chosen fund, with annual reconciliation handled for you.

What payroll in Iceland costs

Your statutory employer cost is a single flat payroll tax plus mandatory pension, plus a payroll partner fee. Iceland’s employer burden is simpler in structure than a split-contribution system, one flat rate rather than several, but the complexity moves to routing pension contributions to the right fund and applying the right ISK income-tax bracket, correctly, every run.

Employer tryggingagjald & pension

6.35% flat tryggingagjald on gross salary, uncapped (7.00% for fishermen), plus the employer’s 11.5% share of the mandatory 15.5% pension contribution, routed to each employee’s own chosen fund every payroll run.

Pay floor (2026)

No statutory minimum wage: sector collective agreements (kjarasamningar) between unions and the SA employers’ confederation set the floor. Entry-level pay under the 2024-2027 VR-SA agreement is ISK 513,000-515,000/month full-time as of January 2026, binding on non-members too.

Income tax (employee)

31.49% up to ISK 498,122/month, 37.99% up to ISK 1,398,450/month, and 46.29% above that on the excess, with a personal tax credit of ISK 72,492/month applied and every bracket withheld correctly on every payslip.

Payroll partner fee

A transparent per-employee or per-payslip fee. We benchmark across our vetted network, typically 15 to 25% below going direct.

Why run it through Bradford Jacobs

One partner, many countries

If you run payroll across several markets, we consolidate it through vetted partners under one point of contact, not a different vendor and a different standard in every country.

  • Independent advice
  • Vetted partners only
  • On your side at renewal

Pricing you can’t get direct

Iceland’s employer cost looks simple on paper, one flat tryggingagjald rate and no employee-side payroll tax, but the accuracy risk sits in the detail: the wrong ISK tax bracket applied, a pension contribution routed to the wrong fund, or a mid-year kjarasamningar pay-floor change missed. We benchmark across our payroll network for rates typically 15 to 25% below going direct, and renegotiate for you at renewal.

  • 15-25% below direct
  • Network benchmarking
  • Renegotiated for you

One flat tax, many pension funds

Tryggingagjald is a single flat rate, but pension contributions must be routed to each employee’s own chosen fund, not one central body, and Skatturinn is unforgiving on a wrong ISK withholding bracket. We place you with partners who get the specifics right, and we stay on your side if anything needs escalating.

  • Direct escalation
  • No support queues
  • Named account contact

20+ years and the local detail

Two decades running compliant payroll across global markets: the kjarasamningar-driven pay floors, the Skatturinn filing deadlines, and the per-employee pension-fund routing that a first Icelandic payroll run easily gets wrong.

  • Two decades of payroll
  • Deadlines & filings
  • Year-end handled

Built to scale across markets

Run payroll in one country or twenty through one partner and one process. As you add markets, the standard does not fragment, you keep a single point of contact and consistent compliance everywhere.

The payroll slips Skatturinn never misses

These are the ones that trip up foreign employers, and the reason a specialist partner pays for itself.

Tax & deduction rates

Misapplying the three-tier ISK income-tax withholding. Routing a pension contribution to the wrong fund, since Iceland has no single central pension body. Missing a statutory benefit or leave entitlement. Each is easy to get wrong alone and visible to Skatturinn and the employee’s pension fund when you do.

Filings, deadlines & reporting

Late remittance of tryggingagjald or pension contributions to Skatturinn or the employee’s chosen pension fund, where penalties and interest apply automatically. None of these are hard for a specialist; all are easy to get wrong alone. That is the whole case for getting your Icelandic payroll partner right.

Your questions answered

Straight answers on running compliant payroll in Iceland.

Yes. Payroll outsourcing assumes you are the legal employer, which usually means you have an Icelandic entity. If you have no entity and do not want one yet, you need an EOR instead, where the partner is the legal employer. We will confirm which applies to you.
Income tax calculation and remittance, the employer-only tryggingagjald, pension contributions routed to each employee’s chosen fund, statutory benefits and leave, payslips, and all statutory filings to Skatturinn. You keep the employment relationship; they keep it compliant and on time.
Iceland has no single central pension body: employees choose their own pension fund, and the mandatory 15.5% combined contribution, an 11.5% employer share and 4% employee share under most collective agreements, has to be routed to the right fund for each person. A payroll partner who has run Icelandic payroll before builds this into onboarding from day one, rather than finding a misrouted contribution at year-end reconciliation.
Predictable, and simpler than a split-contribution system: 6.35% flat tryggingagjald, uncapped, plus the employer’s 11.5% share of the mandatory 15.5% pension contribution, roughly 17.85% of gross salary in statutory employer cost. Add the transparent payroll partner fee and you have your all-in cost.
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons companies come to us. One point of contact and a consistent process across markets, rather than a separate provider and a different standard in every country.
Yes. When you incorporate your ehf. (einkahlutafelag, private limited company), the standard Icelandic entity vehicle, and become the legal employer, we move your people from the EOR arrangement onto your own compliant Icelandic payroll, and manage the handover so nothing is missed.
