Ghanaian Payroll

Operating payroll in Ghana is a major commitment for international companies moving into one of Africa’s up-and-coming economies. Revenues from oil, natural gas, gold and cocoa lay the foundation for Ghana’s economy, while its strategic location on West Africa’s Atlantic coast provides a gateway for further expansion throughout the region.

How We Can Help You

Ghana’s potential is clear, but expert knowledge is essential to handle the paperwork and avoid the red tape that jeopardises implementing your business plan swiftly and successfully… this is why you need Bradford Jacobs on your team. We have total understanding of all the issues surrounding Ghana’s payroll regulations, contracts, taxes, labour laws and every aspect of employment compliance.

Our Employer of Record (EOR) specialist teams answer all your questions and become the effective employer for your staff in this challenging but promising market, while your employees remain under your daily operational control and you focus on taking your business forward.

Bradford Jacobs’ Professional Employer Organisation (PEO) and Employer of Record (EOR) platforms and networks provide complete answers to every question your company will encounter before you move into the economy, especially when it comes to operating payroll.

  • Remote payroll – This option allows businesses to operate under a single payroll system, by adding employees in Ghana to your parent company’s payroll. However, these employees must operate under different regulations, which is likely to cause problems.
  • Internal payroll – You may operate payroll for your subsidiary, especially if you are committed to growing your company’s presence in Ghana. However, this does require hiring dedicated HR staff who understand Ghanaian employment and compliance laws.
  • Ghanas’ payroll processing company – If you are considering outsourcing, then working with a Ghanaian payroll company will help in processing your payroll – but not when it comes to compliance.
  • Ghanas’ payroll outsourcing – However, there is another option available that solves both concerns – by working with Bradford Jacobs. We can handle payroll and compliance for all your employees in Ghana. We take the administrative stress off your shoulders so you can focus on what you do best.
Foreign companies intending to operate in Ghana need to establish a subsidiary to legally recruit and run payroll for their staff. The typical choice is to establish a private limited company, which generally protects the parent company, its shareholders and members from liability as it is an independent legal entity. Company registration is through the Registrar-General’s office and the subsidiary’s operation complies with the Companies Code.

Once the company is incorporated, employers must onboard their new staff and be ready to stay in line with every aspect of the Labour Act. Procedures for onboarding employees in Ghana include:

  • Obtain or verify the employee’s Tax Identification Number
  • Register with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)
  • Obtain or verify the individual’s social insurance number
  • Register with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for contributions to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for social insurance and pensions
  • The employee must have a written contact if they are going to work for more than six months
